Retro Football Shirt Investments

The Investment Nobody Saw Coming: Retro Football Shirts Are Up 203% Since 2016

Forget the FTSE 100, gold and crypto for a moment. If you bought a retro football shirt in 2016 and still have it hanging in your wardrobe, it could now be worth two, three or even five times what you paid for it.

That is not simply speculation. It is what we found after comparing archived retro football shirt prices from 2016 with listings for the same, or closely comparable, shirts in 2026.

To measure how much the market has changed, we examined historical pages saved by the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. The research covered leading specialist retailers, including Classic Football Shirts, Classic11, Vintage Football Shirts and Classic Shirts.

We collected listed prices from 2016 and compared them with 2026 prices for matching shirts wherever possible. The results suggest that original retro football shirts have not merely retained their value. Many have increased substantially as demand for authentic vintage kits has grown.

The headline numbers

Retro football shirt price index showing a basket of 12 shirts increasing in value from £942.81 in 2016 to £2,857.88 in 2026
Our sample of 12 retro football shirts increased in combined listed value by approximately 203% between 2016 and 2026.

Across a sample of 12 classic football shirts from four different retailers, the combined listed value rose from £942.81 in 2016 to £2,857.88 in 2026.

That represents a cash increase of £1,915.07 and an overall rise of approximately 203% across the ten-year period.

  • Combined value in 2016: £942.81
  • Combined value in 2026: £2,857.88
  • Total increase: £1,915.07
  • Overall basket increase: approximately 203%
  • Number of shirts analysed: 12
  • Largest individual price increase: 500%

For comparison, this particular basket appears to have grown faster than several mainstream UK assets over the same broad period. However, retro shirts should not be treated as directly equivalent to shares, property or regulated financial products. The sample is smaller, the market is less liquid, and listed prices do not always equal completed sale prices.

Which retro football shirts increased the most?

Some of the biggest percentage increases came from shirts that were relatively affordable in 2016.

A Borussia Dortmund shirt and a Middlesbrough away shirt that were each listed for less than £30 a decade ago were priced at approximately £175 to £180 in 2026. These shirts increased more dramatically in percentage terms because they started from a much lower base.

By contrast, shirts that were already considered highly desirable collector’s pieces in 2016 generally experienced smaller percentage increases. The 1982–85 Liverpool home shirt, for example, already commanded a premium price ten years ago. Its subsequent increase was more modest proportionally, despite still rising in cash value.

This suggests that the strongest historical returns have not always come from the most expensive shirts. In several cases, previously overlooked designs experienced the greatest growth as nostalgia, fashion trends and collector demand changed.

Why are retro football shirt prices rising?

There is no single explanation for the rise in retro football shirt prices. Instead, several connected trends appear to be driving the market.

1. Football nostalgia has entered the mainstream

Football shirts from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s have moved beyond traditional collecting. They are now regularly worn as streetwear and have become part of wider fashion and popular culture.

Musicians, footballers, celebrities and online creators have helped introduce classic kits to audiences who may not previously have considered buying vintage football clothing.

2. The supply of original shirts is limited

Authentic shirts from previous decades are no longer being manufactured. The number available is therefore fixed and gradually shrinking.

Every original shirt that is lost, damaged, heavily worn or removed from circulation reduces the remaining supply. At the same time, the number of potential buyers continues to grow.

3. Condition and rarity create significant price differences

Condition is one of the biggest influences on the value of a retro football shirt. Unworn shirts with original tags, often described as deadstock or BNWT, can command considerably higher prices than heavily worn examples.

Other factors that may increase value include:

  • Rare sizes
  • Original player names and numbers
  • Player-issue or match-worn specifications
  • Short production runs
  • Unusual away or third shirts
  • Historic tournament or title-winning associations

4. Modern reissues have increased interest in original shirts

Clubs and sportswear brands regularly release modern reproductions inspired by classic designs. Rather than reducing demand for originals, these releases can introduce a new audience to the historic shirt.

Collectors who discover a design through a reissue may subsequently seek the authentic version produced during the original season.

5. The resale market is more organised

Specialist retailers and online marketplaces have made it easier to find, authenticate and compare retro football shirts.

This more organised market gives buyers greater confidence and makes pricing more transparent. It also means rare shirts are exposed to a much larger audience than they would have been through local sellers or private collections alone.

Vintage Football Shirts has also discussed the wider cultural factors behind the renewed popularity of classic kits in its article about why retro football shirts are making a comeback.

Are retro football shirts a good investment?

Our research shows substantial historical price growth across the shirts included in this sample. However, that does not mean every retro shirt will increase in value or that football shirts should be treated as a conventional investment.

Unlike shares or property, a football shirt is also a wearable and culturally significant item. Its value may be influenced by personal memories, historic matches, famous players, fashion trends and changing perceptions of particular designs.

Anyone buying primarily for potential future value should consider the following factors.

Past growth does not guarantee future returns

The strongest performers in this study were connected to specific clubs, eras and designs. Other shirts may remain flat in value or become less desirable over time.

Condition is crucial

Damage, fading, cracking sponsors, missing labels, fabric pulls and unauthorised name sets can all reduce a shirt’s value. Small differences in condition can create large differences in price.

Authenticity matters

The growing popularity of retro football shirts has also increased the number of reproductions and counterfeit shirts in circulation. Buyers should purchase from trusted sellers and check product details carefully.

Some shirts are easier to sell than others

Shirts connected to popular clubs, national teams, famous players and iconic tournaments generally attract a wider audience. More obscure shirts may still be valuable but can take longer to sell.

Listed prices are not guaranteed sale prices

This study compares retailer listing prices. A listed price represents the amount a seller is asking, but it does not confirm that every shirt sold for that exact amount.

Important limitations of the research

This analysis is intended to provide an indication of how the specialist retail market has changed. It should not be interpreted as a complete index of every retro football shirt sold between 2016 and 2026.

The main limitations are:

  • The sample contains 12 shirts and does not represent the entire retro football shirt market.
  • Prices are based primarily on retailer listings rather than confirmed private sale values.
  • Retailers may now have larger audiences, higher operating costs and stronger brand recognition than they did in 2016.
  • The figures do not account for transaction fees, storage costs, inflation or the time required to find a buyer.

These factors mean the results should be viewed as an informative snapshot rather than a guaranteed measure of investment performance.

The takeaway

The retro football shirt market has changed considerably over the past decade. Shirts that were once available for the price of a match ticket can now be listed for hundreds of pounds.

Across the 12 shirts included in our research, the combined listed value rose from approximately £943 to £2,858 between 2016 and 2026.

Whether you collect for nostalgia, fashion, football history or potential long-term value, the archived data demonstrates one clear point: many authentic shirts from the 1980s and 1990s are worth substantially more today than they were ten years ago.

It may therefore be worth checking the back of your wardrobe before assuming that an old football shirt is simply old clothing.

Frequently asked questions

Do retro football shirts increase in value?

Some retro football shirts have increased considerably in value, particularly rare designs in excellent condition. However, values vary by club, season, size, condition, player association and market demand.

What makes a retro football shirt valuable?

Important factors include rarity, authenticity, condition, size, age, original tags, player namesets and links to memorable teams or tournaments.

Are shirts with original tags worth more?

Unworn shirts with their original tags generally command a premium because fewer examples survive in that condition. The size of the premium depends on the rarity and desirability of the shirt.

Where can I buy authentic retro football shirts?

Authentic shirts are available from established specialist retailers and verified vintage football shirt sellers. Buyers should check condition descriptions, seller reviews and authenticity information before purchasing.

Methodology: This research compares selected 2016 retailer listing prices found through Internet Archive Wayback Machine snapshots with 2026 listings from Classic Football Shirts, Classic11, Vintage Football Shirts and Classic Shirts. Prices relate to individual shirts and the closest available matches for condition, size and specification. They may not represent completed sale prices, current stock or the wider market.
